Johnston said at mandatory minicamp that he's excited for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's scheme and expects to be "set up for the yards after catch," Omar Navarro of the Chargers' official site reports.

The 2023 first-round pick, who had his fifth-year option exercised in April, also said he's enjoyed working closely with his new offensive coordinator. The No. 21 overall pick in the 2023 Draft, Johnston has gotten his career on track after what was a subpar rookie season. Across 29 regular-season games over the past two seasons, Johnston has secured 106 of 175 targets for 1,446 yards and 16 touchdowns as Justin Herbert's top downfield perimeter wideout. Johnston has improved his yards-per-catch average every season and finished 21st in the NFL at 14.4 yards per reception during the 2025 campaign. With Keenan Allen still unsigned, there's room for Johnston's role to grow this upcoming season.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said Thursday that Johnston isn't on the trade block, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.

"There's a lot of rumors out there on Twitter," Hortiz said. "And I can tell you this, I have made zero calls about Quentin, and I've had zero calls regarding Quentin." Johnston is heading into the fourth year of his rookie contract, and the Chargers have until May 1 to decide whether to pick up the 2023 first-round pick's $18.1 million fifth-year option for 2027. The 6-foot-2 wide receiver has recorded eight touchdown catches in each of the last two regular seasons, but Johnston has struggled with drops throughout his NFL career.

Johnston secured three of six targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 16-3 loss to the Patriots in the wild-card round.

Still, during the regular season, Johnston demonstrated improved chemistry with quarterback Justin Herbert, as the 2023 first-round pick managed a respectable 51-735-8 line on 84 targets across 14 regular-season appearances. Johnston also was hampered by shin, hamstring, groin and shoulder injuries during the second half of the campaign. He'll look to take another step forward in 2026, which is currently positioned as the final year of his rookie deal with the Chargers, though the team could exercise his fifth-year option this offseason.

Johnston did not play in Sunday's 19-3 loss to the Broncos.

Like several other key contributors in the Chargers' offense, the team afforded Johnston the day to rest in Week 18 as Los Angeles looks ahead to the AFC playoffs. The 24-year-old wideout did not see the field Sunday, ending the 2025 regular season with 51 catches for 735 yards and eight touchdowns on 84 targets, adding two rushes for seven yards. Johnston's eight trips to the end zone matched his career high while his receptions and yards nearly matched his totals from last season. The TCU product continues to develop chemistry with quarterback Justin Herbert, and he'll look to be an impact player Sunday when the Chargers visit the Patriots in the first round of the playoffs.

Johnston brought in five of eight targets for 98 yards in the Chargers' 20-16 loss to the Texans on Saturday.

Johnston got off to a slow start, but he ended up giving his day a significant boost via a team-high 60-yard catch late in the first half. The speedster finished with a team-high yardage tally and co-led the Chargers in targets as well, and Johnston is now averaging 101.5 receiving yards over his last two contests as a Week 18 road clash against the Broncos approaches.

Johnston caught four of his five targets for 104 yards and a touchdown in the 34-17 win over the Cowboys on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Johnston was exceptional after missing the previous week due to a groin injury. The 2023 first-round pick had just 16 catches for 156 yards over the past seven games as Los Angeles struggled to adapt after a litany of offensive-line injuries. Thankfully for fantasy managers, Dallas presented absolutely zero issues for Justin Herbert, setting the stage for Johnston's massive game. It's hard to imagine Johnston putting together another significant day Week 17 against the fearsome Texans defense, but he's undoubtedly a key piece for the offense in terms of the deep-play threat he poses.

After sitting out the Chargers' Week 15 win over the Chiefs, Johnston was a limited participant throughout Week 16 prep before taking a questionable tag into Sunday. The third-year wideout was apparently able to demonstrate enough progress in his recovery from the groin injury to gain clearance for Sunday, though it's unclear if he'll immediately reclaim the heavy snap share he had handled in each of his previous 12 contests. If the Chargers end up restricting Johnston's snap count to some degree, rookie Tre' Harris could retain a larger role in the passing game after recording three catches for 49 yards on five targets in Week 15.

Johnston (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Dallas.

Johnston sat out this past Sunday's win at Kansas City after he showed up on the Chargers' final Week 15 injury report as limited due to a groin issue. He then had practice restrictions this week before the team tagged him with a designation for Week 16 action. His status ultimately will be confirmed about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, but Tre' Harris would figure to benefit again if Johnston is inhibited or sidelined this weekend.
