Farmer has been on the 10-day IL since mid-May due to a strained right forearm. He was cleared for a rehab assignment in late June and went 2-for-20 with one home run, three RBI and five runs scored during his time in the minors. While he didn't look great at the plate during his rehab assignment, Farmer has progressed enough in his recovery to return to the majors, with his reinstatement from the IL corresponding with Atlanta placing Ha-Seong Kim (finger) on the 10-day IL.

Farmer went down a little over a month ago with a right forearm strain but has progressed enough to try things out in a game setting. Interestingly, Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said Monday that Farmer is "gonna catch a lot" on his rehab assignment, Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The 35-year-old Farmer has not seen any action at catcher since 2019, and it's unlikely Atlanta would use him behind the plate on a regular basis even if Drake Baldwin gets hurt.

Farmer had only three plate appearances on the season coming into Sunday, and the team's managerial switch from Brian Snitker to Walt Weiss this offseason hasn't done much for the playing-time outlook of Atlanta's bench players.

Atlanta signed Farmer to a one-year split contract Saturday.

Across 12 Grapefruit League games, he posted a .400/.417/.514 slash line with one home run and five RBI in 36 plate appearances. A path to the Opening Day roster opened up when Jurickson Profar was suspended for the entire 2026 season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug for a second time in the last year, but Farmer could still begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett.

The non-roster invitee played double-digit games at all four infield positions for the Rockies last season while slashing .252/.325/.441 against left-handed pitching, a skill set that could fit for Atlanta as the team scrambles to replace Profar. Farmer's ability to handle shortstop would allow Mauricio Dubon to serve as a platoon partner for Mike Yastrzemski in left field, although Jorge Mateo could also fill that role, while Eli White might just settle into that spot in left field himself.

The Rockies declined Farmer's $4 million mutual option for 2026 on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
