Sears will take a 4.70 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB across 15.1 innings (three starts) into his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Friday against the Blue Jays.

Sears pitched well enough in his season debut against Atlanta last Wednesday to get another turn in the rotation, but his second start was mostly a disaster. The left-hander surrendered three homers among the eight hits he allowed and couldn't finish five frames despite throwing 95 pitches. Only 52 of those offerings were strikes, and Sears walked three batters while throwing just 12 of 25 first pitches over the plate. The Padres should be getting back German Marquez (forearm) soon, as the veteran hurler has pitched well through five games of his minor-league rehab assignment. When Marquez returns, Sears and Griffin Canning are the primary candidates to be removed from the rotation.

Sears' numbers at the Triple-A level this season (7.92 ERA, 1.84 WHIP in 63.2 innings) have been less than stellar, however, so fantasy managers may want to tread carefully while he heads into a two-start week against a pair of tough opponents on the road. After Tuesday's outing, Sears will line up for a second start versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Sunday.

This was Sears' first outing at the major-league level after his poor spring training numbers cost him a shot at the Opening Day roster. He pitched fairly well Wednesday, throwing 53 of 81 pitches for strikes while coming up an out short of a quality start. He had a 7.92 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 62:28 K:BB over 63.2 innings across 14 starts for Triple-A El Paso, but a pitcher-friendly home park in the majors should help Sears perform better than he did while on the hitter-friendly circuit in the minors. Sears struggled a bit in 2025 with a 5.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 117:36 K:BB across 135.2 innings between the Athletics and the Padres. While Lucas Giolito (elbow) and German Marquez (forearm) are both out, Sears should have a chance to stay in a starting role. He could also edge out Griffin Canning for the last spot in the rotation to begin next week when the Padres visit the Cubs for a three-game series if Marquez is nearing a return.
