Today I want to share with you some of the lesions I have learned.

So much of our life is wasted on worry, regret, pain, and heartache. Of course, some of this is inevitable and necessary. But I spent too many of my days sweating over things I didn't need to sweat about.

I simply didn't know better. Or if I did, it just hadn't sunk in yet.

I suppose “life lessons” are called that for a reason. You need to experience life to learn the lessons. And the more life you experience, the more lessons you accumulate.

However, some extremely valuable lessons I learned from other people. Some I discovered from reading great thinkers like Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie. Others were passed on from friends and family.

Although some lessons must be learned through experience, you don't have to wait until you're old to become aware of what's truly meaningful and worthwhile.

You simply need the curiosity and desire for self awareness and personal growth. Once you learn the lessons, you can apply them in your life at any age and see the benefits to your happiness and well-being.

Here I my top 5 life lesion for you.

1 Live with gratitude

Many days, I try to humble myself and hold a 2-minute gratitude session. I simply sit or kneel, with no distractions, close my eyes, and think about what I’m grateful for and who I’m grateful for.

I do it every day, and let me tell you, on the days I do it, it makes me very happy.

Why should that be? Why should the simple act of thinking about who and what I’m grateful for make such a big difference in my life?

Just a few reasons:

Because it reminds you of the positive things in your life. It makes you happy about the people in your life, whether they’re loved ones or just a stranger you met who was kind to you in some ways.

Because it turns bad things into good things. Having problems at work? Be grateful you have work. Be grateful you have challenges, and that life isn’t boring. Be grateful that you can learn from these challenges. Be thankful they make you a stronger person.

Because it reminds you of what’s important. It’s hard to complain about the little things when you give thanks that your children are alive and healthy. It’s hard to get stressed out over paying bills when you are grateful there is a roof over your head.

Because it reminds you to thank others. I’ll talk about this more below, but the simple act of saying “thank you” to someone can make a big difference in that person’s life. Calling them, emailing them, stopping by to say thank you … just taking that minute out of your life to tell them why you are grateful toward them is important to them. People like being appreciated for who they are and what they do. It costs you little but makes someone else happy. And making someone else happy will make you happy.

2 Let your dreams flow

I am a dreamer. Are you? We should let our dreams flow in order to shine and be brilliant.

Here are a few reasons why you should let your dreams flow:

They make life worth living.

Your dreams are what can get you through even the worst days. If you are struggling, your dreams are your reason to keep going. They are why you wake up in the morning and try again. They are what makes your entire life worth living. Without our dreams, we are nothing.

You’ll meet other dream seekers.

When you are motivated and excited about pursuing your dreams, you’ll attract other people who have the same values and interests. The more you surround yourself with high achievers, the further you’ll go. Then, when times get tough, and it’s hard to keep going, your friends will motivate you to continue achieving.

You can be an inspiration to others.

If you decide to go and follow your dreams, you will give hope to others who want to do the same. You can serve as their example and their reason why they should give it a try. You can help them, coach them, and encourage them to keep going.

You can provide for your family.

When you are this motivated, it’s very hard to fail. If you are very set on your dreams, and you make sure that you can make an income along the way, you’ll be able to provide for your family. Some dreams take longer than others to achieve, but that’s what makes the end goal so worth it.

So that you can finally be happy.

Life without dreams is depressing. Search far and wide for yours and make a promise to yourself that you will start pursuing them. Once you get on the path towards your goal, you will notice a distinct change in how you feel.

To prove them wrong.

All of us have been around people who told us our dreams weren’t possible. Let that add fuel to your fire. Think about all the people who said it would never happen and go out and prove them wrong.

It will make YOU proud.

Even better than making your parents proud, you will be proud of yourself! Your confidence will rise, and you’ll enjoy the excitement and the adrenaline that comes with doing something you’ve always wanted to do.

You only live once.

Life is short. Our days are numbered, so why spend them doing something we don’t love? It’s time to decide to go for it.

3 Give up control

We must learn to let go. Release the stress. You were never in control anyway.

I’ve noticed that things go much more smoothly when I give up control—when I allow them to happen instead of making them happen. Unfortunately, I’m terrible at this.

Although I’m much better than I used to be, I’m a bit of a control freak. I often use perfectly good energy trying to plan, predict, and prevent things that I cannot possibly plan, predict, or prevent.

As a recovering control freak, there are three things I know for sure about trying to control things:

1. We try to control things because of what we think will happen if we don’t.

In other words, control is rooted in fear.

2. Control is also a result of being attached to a specific outcome—an outcome we’re sure is best for us, as if we always know what’s best.

When we trust that we’re okay no matter what circumstances come our way, we don’t need to micro-manage the universe. We let go. And we open ourselves to all sorts of wonderful possibilities that aren’t there when we’re attached to one “right” path.

3. The energy of surrender accomplishes much more than the energy of control.

I suspect it’s slightly different for everyone, but here’s what control mode looks and feels like for me: My vision gets very narrow and focused, my breath is shallow, adrenaline is pumping and my heart rate increases.

My mind shifts from topic to topic and from past to future very quickly, and I have little concentration, poor memory, and almost no present-moment awareness.

In surrender mode, I’m calm, peaceful. Breathing deeply, present in the moment. I see clearly, and my vision extends out around me, allowing me to (literally) see the bigger picture.

So, the great irony is that attempting to control things feels less in control. When I’m micro-managing and obsessing over details, I know I’m in my own way.

Learn to let go every day. We think we are in control but we actually not.

4 surrender your ego

The truth is that in the process of our personal developmental journey and life challenges we are bound to get hurt. Be it different experiences, bad relationships, betrayal or abandonment, a lot of these experiences form in us like a leach of fear that drains and taints our perspective on future experiences and relationships.

I often hear people say, “I have to be more careful, I was hurt last time.” And “How can I trust anyone when so many people have betrayed me?” But is this the actual truth or only the perspective/voice of your ego?

Shouldn’t we instead become better people from those experiences rather than close ourselves to new ones?

Shouldn’t we instead be everything contrary to those experiences and people, and just use them as lessons to tackle new challenges with a new awareness and knowledge?

By being more controlling of our lives, we block ourselves from new experiences. I don’t believe the aim should be to be more “careful” but rather to be “full of care.” We can’t control our relationships to be certain we won’t get hurt, it’s a matter of learning from our past experiences and learning to let go of our egos to live like a child does. To fall and get back up, but with every fall become a bit stronger, smarter and more aware.

We are here to experience, to develop nurturing relationships with our higher self and to find our purpose. You are not your EGO!

5 believe in miracles

When we believe in miracles, we then create them.

Ever since I was a child, I believed in miracles. Miracles are not once-in-a-lifetime supernatural events; rather, miracles are at the root of everyday occurrences. We ourselves are miraculous!

Imagine the great Truth of who you are. Imagine the miracle of the creation of each Being: the baby who is born nine months from the moment of conception; the oak tree that was once a seed; the miracle of people flying within jet planes or of voices transmitted via telephone wires; and who does not perceive the Internet as a rather miraculous feat of technology?

We live in a world filled with miracles, and yet we take them for granted. Since childhood, I was always amazed at the life around me.

As one who believed in miracles, I always felt safe. It is not that I was fearless; it is simply that I knew that I would always land on my feet. When I was younger, I always felt protected by God, and so I knew that no harm would ever come to me...and it never has. But now I see the greater picture. I created my safety simply by my belief that I am safe!
