49ers OLB Aldon Smith will fly to New York to meet with Roger Goodell regarding potential league discipline "in the near future." "It could be as soon as next week," according to ESPN's Bill Williamson. Smith was recently sentenced to 11 days of work release after having felony gun charges reduced to misdemeanors. He was also arrested for DUI in 2013, and a bomb threat at LAX airport this past spring, but got off easy via the court system. The NFL is tentatively expected to suspend Smith 4-6 games.

49ers OLB Aldon Smith will face sentencing at 1:30 PT on Friday in connection with his multiple felony gun charges. The sentencing date was bumped up a week. Smith escaped charges stemming from his April bomb threat at LAX airport. We should have another update soon.

Appearing on Sirius XM Radio, ex-NFL GM Bill Polian predicted Aldon Smith will receive a three-game suspension "at most" for his off-field transgressions. Smith caught an enormous break Tuesday when L.A. prosecutors decided against charging him for (allegedly) making a false bomb threat while (allegedly) drunk at an airport this April. The 24-year-old was also arrested for DUI in January 2012, and suspicion of DUI plus marijuana possession in September 2013. In October of 2013, Smith was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon stemming from a 2012 stabbing incident. Meanwhile, Browns WR Josh Gordon is facing a year-long ban for smoking weed.

The Los Angeles City Attorney will not file charges against 49ers OLB Aldon Smith for his April 13 arrest for making a false bomb threat at LAX airport. Smith catches a big-time break and is getting off extremely easy. The only legal hurdle to clear for Smith now is a July 25 sentencing stemming from his pleading of no contest to DUI and weapons charges. Smith is going to be suspended at the start of the season; the question is just how long he will be banned.

Profootballtalk reports the NFL remains expected to suspend 49ers OLB Aldon Smith for at least one game to start the season. Smith pleaded no contest to DUI and weapons charges, and faces sentencing on July 25. While he's tentatively expected to avoid jail time -- as long as he stays out of trouble for the next month -- the league is still going to come down on Smith with a suspension. It was rumored last month that Smith could face an eight-game ban. The 49ers will turn to Corey Lemonier and Dan Skuta in his absence.

USA Today's Tom Pelissero confirms it's a "matter of when, and for how long," Aldon Smith will be suspended following Wednesday's no contest pleas to three felony weapons charges, and DUI. Pelissero expects the NFL to "come down hard," noting that alcohol and guns "are two of the league's hot-button issues." Pelissero compares the situation to that of ex-Bears DT Tank Johnson, who was suspended eight games in 2007 following a weapons charge. The totality and repeated nature of Smith's transgressions are worse than what Johnson did. Eight games would be nice.

49ers OLB Aldon Smith pleaded "no contest" to three felony weapons charges and misdemeanor DUI on Wednesday. Smith is apparently ready to accept his punishment and get back to football. His sentencing hearing is set for July 25, the week the 49ers report to training camp. The weapons charges stem from a July 2012 incident at his home when he threw a party and shots were fired -- not by Smith himself -- and hit two partygoers. Smith's DUI arrest happened last September. He faces a maximum of four years and four months in prison. This now paves the way for either the team or NFL to hand down a suspension. Smith will likely miss multiple games. Smith, of course, also has the misdemeanor LAX "bomb threat" incident still on his plate.

"Several league sources" believe the 49ers will exercise Aldon Smith's fifth-year team option for 2015. The 49ers have until 4PM ET Saturday to decide. Smith would have been cut by now were he a lesser player, but the 49ers will keep rolling the dice that he'll get his life in order.
