Nelson is viewed by the Yankees as an option for both long and short relief, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. "I'm quite certain he can impact our bullpen in a short situation but also have the ability to give us innings as well," manager Aaron Boone stated Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson was primarily a starter in the minor leagues, but he came out of the bullpen for all 11 of his appearances with New York last season. The 25-year-old isn't seen as a contender for a starting role but has a shot to break camp as a member of the team's bullpen, which would offer the Yankees situational flexibility.

Nelson was mentioned by Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Saturday as a candidate to take James Paxton's (forearm) spot in the rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Yankees don't need to come to a decision on Paxton's replacement immediately with their weekend series against the Mets cancelled due to coronavirus concerns, but the southpaw is expected to be shelved for at least two weeks, so the team will eventually need to fill his spot. Nelson has come out of the bullpen for each of his three big-league appearances; however, he was developed as a starter in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old has spent much of the season at the team's alternate training site but impressed with a three-inning scoreless outing upon his return to the big-league club Tuesday.

Nelson was recalled by the Yankees on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson made the first two appearances of his big-league career earlier in the year, allowing six earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. He'll presumably fill a low-leverage relief role during his time with the team.

The Yankees optioned Nelson to their alternate training site Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
With the Yankees having to reduce their active roster from 30 to 28 men ahead of Thursday's series finale with the Phillies, Nelson found himself as the odd man out in manager Aaron Boone's nine-man bullpen. Nelson's demotion was likely solidified after he was hit hard in long relief Wednesday in the Yankees' 11-7 loss in the first game of a doubleheader. He recorded five outs and surrendered seven runs (six earned0 on seven hits and a walk.

Nelson (1-0) pitched three scoreless and hitless innings to earn the win against Boston on Saturday, issuing two walks while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson was summoned to start the fifth inning and exited after the seventh without allowing a hit. His control was shaky -- only 23 of his 41 pitches were strikes, and he yielded two free passes -- but he avoided any damage by inducing eight swinging strikes and holding the Red Sox without a hit. The right-hander struck out 114 batters in 89.2 innings in the minors last season, so he could have a bright future, especially if he is able to reduce his walk rate.

Nelson is expected to be added to the Yankees' 30-man roster Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson was unable to secure a place on the Opening Day roster at summer camp, but he'll join the big club for the third game of the season. The 24-year-old posted a 4.71 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB over 21 innings (four starts) at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.

Nelson was reassigned to the Yankees' alternate training site Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson had been sent down to Triple-A prior to the suspension of spring training, so it's no surprise that he won't break camp with the big-league club. The right-hander is on the Yankees' 40-man roster and has a history of posting excellent strikeout numbers, so he could conceivably make his major-league debut at some point this season.

Nelson will attend summer camp as part of the Yankees' 60-man roster.
EDGE Analysis
Nelson was optioned to the minors in early March, but he'll have a chance to put his arsenal on display in summer camp and could make his big-league debut at some point in 2020. The 24-year-old racked up 114 strikeouts in 89.2 innings across three minor-league levels last season.

Nelson was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports.
EDGE Analysis
The flamethrowing right-hander struggled with his control this spring, allowing four walks in five innings, though he did hold opponents scoreless in his three appearances. He'll begin the season in the minors, but Nelson has a chance to contribute to the big-league club this season if he can find a way to cut down his walk rate.
